#1. Complement of a Number

A compliment is that which relates a number to unity that is 1 or 10 or 100 or 1000. To obtain a complement of a number the rule is – Subtract all digits from nine and the last digit from ten.

For the number relating to 10,

  • The complement of 7 is 3
  • The complement of 9 is 1

For the number relating to 100,

  • The complement of 89 is 11
  • The complement of 78 is 22

Ques. 1: Find the Complement of 84

Subtract all digits from nine and last from 10

8 from 9 is 1

4 from 10 is 6

84  is 16 less than 100. 16 is the complement of 84.

Ques. 2: Find the complement of 755

Subtract each of the digits from 9 and the last digit from 10.

7 from 9 is 2

5 from 9 is 4

5 from 10 is 5

#2. Subtraction

The Vedic sutra Nikhilam is used for subtracting two numbers. When the top row digits are greater than or equal to the digits below, then subtraction takes place as it is. The method of a complement is not used. But when top row digits are smaller than the digits below, complements are used. In the column where complements are not used, drop 1.

Take the difference between the two digits when the bottom row digit is larger and write the complement of the difference. When complements are no longer needed we subtract an extra 1 from the next left-hand column.
