The first uprising for independence was witnessed in 1857, the cause for the uprising was the greased cartridges.
The Queen’s Proclamation abolished the East India Company in 1858. Changes were made in the governing pattern, and the Government of Indian Act 1858 was enacted after they saw the uprising of 1857. The next phase of the freedom movement began after the formation of the Indian National Congress in 1885.
A huge transformation was brought in the freedom movement by the non-violent methods of Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi initiated the non-cooperation movement, which was followed by the Civil Disobedience movement.
Later the Indian freedom struggle witnessed many crucial events, like the Home Rule Movement of 1916, Gandhi’s first satyagraha in 1917, the Rowlatt Act of 1919 and the infamous Jallianwala Massacre of 1919. Revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, Batukeshwar Dutt, Jogesh Chatterjee and many more shook the roots of the British Government.

The failure of the Cripps Mission in 1942 led to the Quit India Movement. In 1946, Cabinet Mission proposed the formation of the Union of India.
The British government announced in 1947 to transfer all the power to the state of India by June 1948. The Mountbatten Plan of 1947 was introduced to divide India, which was accepted by the All India Congress Committee on 15 June 1947.
