Fractions are one of the major topics in mathematics. It shows a portion of a whole. When we break something into smaller pieces. It tells you how many broken pieces you have.

It comprises two parts numerator and the denominator. The numerator represents how many pieces you have and the denominator represents how many parts the whole piece was divided into.

Likewise, the whole number it can also be added, subtracted, multiplied and divided. It can be represented in several ways. The size of a fraction can also be distinguished to check out the largest and the smallest fraction.

Read the article till the end to understand the concept of fraction for kids.

## Introduction to a Fraction

Fraction is a way where a certain number can be distributed into two parts. It represents a section of a whole. It is written as the number of equal pieces over one whole piece. It composes of two numbers, the numerator and the denominator separated by a line.

### Numerator

The Numerator is the number of pieces being counted. It is the upper part of a fraction. For example in 1/3, 1 is the numerator.

### Dividing Line

A dividing line is used to separate the numerator and the denominator. It makes it clear to identify what is the numerator and the denominator without causing any confusion.

### Denominator

The Denominator is the number of pieces in the whole. It is the lower part of a fraction. For example, in 1/6, 6 is the denominator.

### Half

A whole number halved into two equivalent parts. It is called half of the whole number.

### One-third

A whole number split up into three equal parts. It is called one-third of the whole number.

### One-fourth or Quater

A whole number distributed into four equivalent parts. It is called one-fourth or quarter of the whole number.

### One-fifth

A whole number divided into five equal parts. It is called one-fifth of the whole number.

### One-tenth

A whole number split up into ten equivalent parts. It is called one-tenth of the whole number.

For instance, a paper tear up into two equal parts the fraction is 1/2, if it’s divided into three equal parts then it is 1/3. Usually, a useful way to learn about fractions for kids is through a picture. Kids grab knowledge faster and easily through pictorial representation.

Example 1: Have a look at the picture above and analyse that if the fruit is divided into equal slices. When it is cut down into two equal slices the fraction is 1/2, similarly, if it is cut down three equal slices it will be 1/3 and if it’s cut down into four slices it will be 1/4.

Example 2: A cake is divided into eight equal pieces. If you remove one piece from the eight pieces, the fraction will be 1/8. Similarly, if you remove two pieces then it will be 2/8 and so on.

### Types of Fraction

There are various types of fractions and various ways in which the same fraction can be written. There are mainly three types, proper fraction, improper fraction or top-heavy fraction, and mixed fraction. Usually, the most preferable is the proper fraction.

#### Proper Fraction

In a fraction, if the numerator is less than the denominator then it is called a proper fraction. For example, in  2/3, 2 is less than 3 therefore, it’s a proper fraction.

Examples: 2/5, 1/4, 5/10.

#### Improper Fraction

In a fraction, if the numerator is greater than the denominator then it is called an improper fraction. For example, in 4/2, 4 is greater than 2 therefore, it’s an improper fraction. It is also known as a top-heavy fraction since the numerator is greater at the top than the denominator at the bottom.

Examples: 4/3, 6/2, 7/4.

#### Mixed Fraction

A fraction composing a whole number and the fraction is called a mixed fraction. For example, 2 ½ which is addressed as two and a half. Similar for 1¼ is addressed as one and a quarter. It is the mixture of a whole number and a fraction.

Examples: 1⅓, 2¼, 3½.
