Numerator

The Numerator is the number of pieces being counted. It is the upper part of a fraction. For example in 1/3, 1 is the numerator.

Dividing Line

A dividing line is used to separate the numerator and the denominator. It makes it clear to identify what is the numerator and the denominator without causing any confusion.

Denominator

The Denominator is the number of pieces in the whole. It is the lower part of a fraction. For example, in 1/6, 6 is the denominator.

For instance, a paper tear up into two equal parts the fraction is 1/2, if it’s divided into three equal parts then it is 1/3. Usually, a useful way to learn about fractions for kids is through a picture. Kids grab knowledge faster and easily through pictorial representation.

Example 1: Have a look at the picture above and analyse that if the fruit is divided into equal slices. When it is cut down into two equal slices the fraction is 1/2, similarly, if it is cut down three equal slices it will be 1/3 and if it’s cut down into four slices it will be 1/4.

It is also known as a top-heavy fraction since the numerator is greater at the top than the denominator at the bottom.

Examples: 4/3, 6/2, 7/4.

Mixed Fraction

A fraction composing a whole number and the fraction is called a mixed fraction. For example, 2 ½ which is addressed as two and a half. Similar for 1¼ is addressed as one and a quarter. It is the mixture of a whole number and a fraction.

Examples: 1⅓, 2¼, 3½.
