The English language has two articles: ‘a/an’ and ‘the’. ‘The’ is used to address or refer to specific or any particular nouns, ‘a/an’ article is used to modify any non – particular or non – specific nouns. ‘The’ is a definite article and ‘a/an’ is an indefinite article.
‘A’ and ‘an’ show that the noun to be modified is indefinite, and refers to any member of a group. “ My son wants a dog for Christmas.” This here refers to any dog. We don’t know which dog, because the dog hasn’t been found yet.
The definite article is used before plural and singular nouns when the noun is particular or specific. ‘The’ signals that the noun is definite and it refers to a particular member of the group. “ The dog bit me and ran away.” Here we are talking about a specific dog, not any dog.
