Mathematics has always been a part of our lives, knowingly or unknowingly, it has always been there with us. Every day we come across hundreds of situations where we have to make use of mathematics and that has been a part of our daily life, for a very long time. So, we have to learn it, whether we do it with all our heart that or considering it as a problem, we have to bear it in the end. So, why not just do it happily?
Well, let’s just today move forward to know more about one such great concept of this subject and that is – Fractions!
So, what is this fraction? And how can we use it? Don’t worry because like always we’ll help you through this.
Fractions are not just whole numbers but they are even bigger than that and they mean exactly as they sound: they have two numbers – a numerator that is the upper part of the number and the denominator which is the lower part of the number.
Fractions represent the equal part of a whole or a collection.
For example – There is a watermelon and you have divided it into two equal parts. So, each part is one half of that watermelon and can be denoted as ½.
Similarly, when those two halves are further divided into two equal parts, they are denoted as ½ but the entire watermelon has been divided into four equal parts and that will be denoted as ¼.
But do you know what are equivalent fractions?
No, then let’s get on a ride with us.
In Mathematics, Equivalent fractions can be defined as fractions having different numerators and denominators and they together represent the same value or proportion of the whole.
For example:
1/2 = 1/2
Similarly, 4/8 when converted to its simplest form is also 1/2.
Therefore, 1/2 = 4/8
#1. Equivalent fractions represent the same amount of distance and points on a number line
#2. All equivalent fractions reduce to the same fraction in their simplest form.

Let’s just take an example – Suppose we have two fractions: 1/2 and 2/4.
When these fractions are reduced to their simplest form, we found out that both of them have the same value but their numbers are different, therefore how can we find out that they have the same value.
So, in order to take out different equivalent fractions, all we need to do is either multiply or divide the numerator and denominator with the same number to make these two fractions equivalent to each other.
For example – We can either multiply 1/2 by the same number, i.e., by 2 to make it equal to the other number, i.e., 2/4.
Or we can divide 2/4 by 2 to make it similar to 1/2.
Isn’t this too simple? Why don’t you try this at home with your kids? It’ll be fun.

Yes, it’s the game of pattern blocks. All you have to do is get some pattern blocks and ask your kids to arrange them in ways you ask them to, and Voila! They’ll be able to learn this super easy.
Fraction Bingo requires you to take a piece of paper and draw some patterns on it and then all you have to do is ask your kids to colour the particular fractions as given by you. And this is another way of learning fractions.
Fractions are super easy to learn! All you have to do is work a little harder with your kids in order to make it clear to them because you can’t just go with the old techniques of making them sit at one place and learn everything like a parrot. Remember – the more fun it is, the easier it becomes for them to learn something.
