Science is the study of everything that is around us. Easy Science Activities for Kids

Microwave Ivory Soap Experiment

Materials Required

  1. Bar of Ivory Soap ( Do not use any other brand).
  2. Microwave.
  3. A Microwaveable dinner plate.

How to Perform The Experiment

  1. Unwrap the bar of soap you have and place it on a microwaveable plate.
  2. Place the bar of soap on the microwaveable dinner plate,
  3. Allow the microwave to run on high heat for 1 to 2 minutes. Don’t heat it more than that.

What will You Observe?

The Ivory Bar soap will start expanding at around the 15-second mark. It will be as if the soap is rolling, expanding and writhing as if the soap is alive. On examining the soap you will realize that it is a crumbly powder. Be sure that you do not allow the children to put the powder in their eyes.

Why does the Soap Expand?

There is a high volume of air in the Ivory Soap bar, hence when you put it in the microwave it expands and forms a fluffy cloud in a matter of seconds.

Fizzy Fruit and Ph Indicator

Materials Required

  1. Multiple Containers.
  2. Straws or Pipettes to transfer
  3. Clementine or any other acidic fruit.
  4. Baking Soda.
  5. Teaspoons.
  6. Large and Small cups.
  7. Red Cabbage Jiffy Juice Powder.

How to Perform the Experiment?

  1. Dilute a 1/8th tablespoon of Red Cabbage Jiffy Juice Powder in 4 cups of water to create your Ph indicator. You will attain a liquid of purple colour.
  2. Pour this Ph indicator into three different containers
  3. Fill a jar with water. The ideal Ph of this should be 7.
  4. Mix ¼ tablespoon of baking soda with half a cup of water.
  5. Use the straw to transfer the baking soda mixture into one of the containers with the Ph indicator. Observe the colour changes.
  6. Use the acidic fruit and mash it up to extract some juice. Pour this juice into an indicator jar and notice how the colour changes.
  7. Compare all the jars and discuss the different acids and bases about the Ph Scale.
  8. Use some of the acidic juice and mix it with some baking soda and notice how a reaction occurs. You will see some bubbles. Allow kids to dip a piece of the fruit in a small amount of baking soda. Your children will notice bubbles forming in their mouth.

How does the Experiment Work?

In the presence of water, sodium bicarbonate and citric acid react to form water, carbon dioxide and sodium citrate.

Water Displacement Activity

Materials Required

  1. A clear plastic container
  2. Stones and rocks of different size
  3. A plastic toy
  4. A permanent marker

How to Conduct The Experiment?

  1. Go through different containers. Use a container with the largest opening.
  2. Mark the initial level of water on the container, as to monitor your progress.
  3. Allow the kids to drop stones of different sizes in the container.
  4. Note your observation.

What did You Observe?

Your kids will observe the level of water rise and you can point out that the water displaced is the same weight as the stones dropped in the container. As the only direction in which water could go was up, hence the level of water rose. The inspiration of this activity is from the fable the crow and the pitcher.
