You would be glad to know that Jolly Phonics is used in over 100 countries to teach students English. It has been there for 25 years.
It is a part of the UK syllabus for kindergarten kids and above. Teachers teach the children the sound of a letter. And then how to write it. So, the sound of a letter comes first, and then it comes.

There are 42 letter-based sounds. Now, there are only 26 letters in the English alphabet. But why are there 42 letter sounds?
It’s because some sounds are digraphs. One letter does not produce the sound, but a combination of two letters. Examples of such sounds are “or” and “ee”.
So, how do you learn? Children learn actions for each sound. So they learn the letter through action and sound. Slowly and slowly, the child forgets the action and remembers the sound. So, when a word is told to him, he can come up with its letters.
Under this program, children learn six sounds in groups of seven. They include both single letter sound and two letter sounds. The students are told stories and songs for the actions and sounds for every letter.
For example, when a child learns the letter “I”, he has to produce the sound “I”. This is the sound of a mouse. So, the child learns to produce the sound of a mouse for the letter “I’. Children learn the 42 letter sounds within nine weeks.
Students are introduced to words in groups. It’s because students can learn new words in a group based on the words in the earlier group.
The lowest category in the Jolly Phonics tricky words list is:
I
The
He
She
Me
We
Be
Was
To
Do
Of
Once you learn those, you can move ahead.
Learning these words is not so tough.
By drawing in the air: Do you know that it’s the easiest way to learn the letters? Just draw them in the air with your hands. The teacher hides the word with her hand. If you have drawn it correctly, the teacher knows you have understood it. This approach is known as Look, Cover, Write and Check.
The teacher says to them: Just listen to your teacher when she says the words. This way, you can also grasp the letters of the word.
Through a saying: The teacher will tell you a saying. Then note down the initials in the letters of the words of this saying. These are the same as the letters of the word. Easy, isn’t it.

You don’t learn the letters as they appear in the alphabet. (s, a,t, i,p,n) is taught first because you can write many words of three letters with it.
Some of the sounds can be produced through different letters. For example, the sounds, “ai”, “ae”, and “ay” all have the sound ‘ai”. But, you will be taught only one letter combination to produce this sound.
Also, children learn one letter per day, i.e. one sound. The teacher introduces a letter to the student. He/she then asks the child to create a matching action and sound.
A child has now started identifying letters through their sounds. Hence, the next step is to start writing them.
A child should grab the pencil between his thumb and the first two fingers of the right hand. If he‘s left-handed, he should hold the pencil with his left hand.
So, to teach writing to a child, he is first shown how to hold a pencil in his band. The first letter he is taught to write is “o’. He has to draw a circle in the anti-clockwise direction. The letter “d”
is then taught to the student. In this, he uses the pencil to make the circle in an anticlockwise position. Then he draws the line in the letter.
The next step is how to read the words when children can read it’s letters. This process is known as blending. The children start combining the sounds together to form new words. So, when children read words, they use the sounds of different letters in them to say the word.
This is a different procedure in which children learn how to write words. They can easily write the letters because they know the sounds of the letters.
The last part is the tricky words. In these words, sounds don’t match their spellings. For example, there is the word “who”. It has just two sounds, “w” is silent. So, children can’t say this word. They will mix the sounds of “w”, “h”, and “o”, which is wrong. They just need to mix the sounds of the letters” h” and “o”. Also, children can’t write the word “who”. They will write it as “ho” and not “who”.
