How to Make Reading Books Interesting for Children? Games, Tips, and Much More!

Book reading can be tedious for many kids. Parents need to guide children from a young age to inculcate this habit in kids. Parents should ensure that kids enjoy reading as reading habits will improve their vocabulary and reading comprehension skills.  It is more important to develop a reading habit at an early age as it improves language skills and stimulates the imagination. If you are wondering how to make reading books interesting for children, keep reading this blog till the end.

Become a Role Model

Parents need to become role models. Create a reading culture in your family; it is the best way to make kids read easily. In many homes, family members sit together to watch the television or play board games. Similarly, fixing an hour when everybody reads something would work wonders with your kids. Choose various books of different genres, be it comics, stories, and spoil your young reader with plenty of choices. It will encourage them to read according to their interest.

Play Word Hunt

Book reading for children can be interesting by sending them on a treasure hunt, only this time, the treasure should be a particular word in a book. Give your kids a word and ask them to search for it in the book. It will motivate them to read to find that target word; eventually, they will develop an interest in reading.

This game can be made more interesting by putting the letters in a bowl and asking them to pick five words out of it and search in the book. You can also make thermocol cuttings of the word and ask them to match it in the book. The group activities will encourage children as they will see others too are reading and participating.

Discuss Regularly

Kids enjoy being a part of family discussions when the topics are of their interest. Read short novels, stories of their interest and discuss them in groups weekly. Seeing you discussing the story or an interesting character or topic in the book will breed curiosity among kids.  Parents can discuss the story’s basic plot and leave the conclusion or ending for the child. It will motivate the kids to read the whole chapter and eventually will develop their interest in reading.

Play Quiz

Kids enjoy playing games, and nothing is better than teaching through fun games. Make reading fun for kids by playing quizzes. Ask them to answer questions by reading a particular page or part of the book. Hunting for the answers will excite them to read interestingly. Award them with points or rewards on each correct answer. Book reading for children can be encouraged through quiz activities. Give hints to small children so that they can initiate reading habits by starting by finding answers in a line or paragraph.

Choose Topics Wisely

Reading habit is more about developing interest first. Do not make your child read the topic that you want them to read. To develop an interest in reading, begin with the topics that the child wants to know about. If they like trucks, buy books related to trucks and automobiles;  if they like fairies and elves, get them fantasies and fairytales.

Book choices also vary according to time. If it is bedtime, then better not give them animated books, as then the child won’t sleep. Also, decide how you would like to read it out to them — whether you want to act it out or make your narration explanatory. Use your best dramatic ability, your expressions, voice modulation, necessary props, etc., to make the narration more engaging for children. Make it enjoyable by changing your voice while reading out the parts of each character. Add a little fun to your stories.

Involve the Child

The best way to interest kids in reading is to make them part of the story. Add kids as a character to get them involved in the narrative. Ask them questions while enacting the story as to what will happen next. Try to read a book with pictures as it can easily engage children can’t wait to turn the pages to find what’s next.  Book reading for kids is important as it will make them feel connected to their inner creative self.

Let Them Choose the Book

Letting them choose doesn’t mean you should let them pick any random book from the bookstore. Select five to six books and ask the child to pick from the assortment. They will choose the book and be happy as they will feel a sense of ownership towards that book. Give them enough opportunity to handle and own books. When you care for a book, you feel more attached to it. It will develop an interest in them for picking their own books and maintaining a collection.

Parents should make separate reading spaces that are well lit and calm. It will attract them to sit and read for as long as they wish.
