How to Find Missing Numbers in Addition for Kids? Helping Kids Learn These Concepts Easily and Quickly

There are in total four basic operations in mathematics of the arithmetic, these are –

#1. Addition

#2. Subtraction

#3. Multiplication

#4. Division

Today, we’ll be discussing more about one the four mathematical operations, i.e., Addition.

Addition is the addition of two whole numbers that results in the sum or the total amount of two or more values combined.

For example, Meera has in total 5 apples in her basket. She goes out and gets two more apples. Now, how many apples does she have in total?

For finding out the answer to this, we will add these two terms, i.e., 5 + 2 = 7. So, she has 7 apples in total with her. And this is called addition.

How to Find Missing Numbers in Addition for Kids?

The basic concept of finding out the missing numbers, in addition, requires one to understand the complete idea of addition facts as well as the relationship of addition to subtraction.

For example –

#1. 4 + ? = 8

Follow the procedure to find the missing addend. The question given is ‘4 and how many more make 8?’ The answer is 4.

Therefore, when the number is put in the place of the question mark (?), the sum is written as 4 + 4 = 8.

#2. ? + 3 = 6

To find the missing addend we read the question given as ‘how many more and 3 make 6?’ The answer is 3.

Therefore, when the number is put in the place of the question mark (?), the sum is written as 4 + 2 = 6.

#3.  4 + ? = 9

To find the missing addend we read the question given as ‘4 and how many more make 9?’ The answer is 5.

Therefore, when the number is put in the place of the question mark (?), the sum is written as 5 + 4 = 9.

#4.  ? + 2 = 7

To find the missing addend we read the question given as ‘how many more and 2 make 7?’ The answer is 5.

Therefore, when the number is put in the place of the question mark (?), the sum is written as 2 + 5 = 7.

But today, we are here to help you through it so that you can make it simpler and easier for kids. Now, let’s today discuss the topic of addition.

Addition forms an integral part of the Mathematics syllabus and is extremely essential for kids all over the world to learn. From their primary classes, they are taught simple addition sums so that it can be easy for them to deal with these questions when they grow up.

Additional Sums for Kids

Additional sums are one of the simplest, interesting, yet is the most fun topic in mathematics, especially for kids in primary classes. Maths is an interesting subject but it has always played a big role in scaring kids because of its difficult nature.

There could be a few simple steps involved in teaching additional concepts and sums to kids. These are:

#1. Use a Number Line

At this stage of life, kids learn easily and quickly with the help of number lines. They help kids to learn mathematical concepts easily and effortlessly. A number line requires them to remove the need to count out the first number in the sum.

For example – If they want to add 4 and 3, they need to put their finger on the number 4 and move 3 spaces ahead of it, and that is when they’ll reach the number, i.e., 7.

#2. Abacus

Yes, it is such an easy and interesting way to help your kids learn addition. And when they are taught using this board from their very childhood, it becomes even more important for them to understand these concepts easily and remember them for a long time. It can also help them in their future to deal with more addition sums and that too on a greater level.

#3. Counting Up

Yes, this is another amazing way to help your kids learn addition. Once they are completely aware of using the number line, all they require is to use the “counting up” strategy in their head. You can make them practice this in a simple way, just ask them to add the numbers in their head. Imagine a number line in your mind and move the places as you are asked to do.

#4. Finding the Ten

This is another mental maths trick for kids to make the additional concepts easier for them. Instead of adding two numbers just as they are asked to do, ask them to add the numbers first to make up a 10. And then add the remaining numbers to it.

For example, in order to add 7 and 5, first add 3 out of 5 to 7, which makes up 10. Then go on and add the remaining 2. So, the answer will be- \

7 + 5

7 + 3 + 2

10 + 2

12

And this is how you can teach concepts of additional for children.
