How to make Abacus for Kids at Home? Make Math Your Child’s Best Friend

Making your child learn tricks for doing maths is a great way to make them amiable with the subject. There are fewer people who love math and they pursue it further but the ones who do it have a different bond with the subject. There are so many tricks for math that helps a child solve any question related to math. The ones who are afraid of maths can easily understand the question and solve it. One such tool that is used to perform any digit number easily is Abacus. It has helped millions of students to solve large digit numbers in a short span of time.

What is an Abacus for Kids?

An abacus is a manual calculation aid consisting of perforations or discs that can be pushed up and down on a number of sticks or strings in a wooden frame. It does not measure itself; it is merely a tool to help a man calculate by recalling what is counted. It is a century-old measurement instrument. It is commonly used by many, especially in Asian and African countries and in other parts of the world by merchants and traders. While the oldest Abacus found in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Persia, Greece, Rome, and India is reputedly as old as 300 BC it has been used, its use is widely found in China and Japan. It consists of two parts: The ‘Top Row’ for ‘fives’, The ‘Bottom Rows’ for ‘ones’. It has several columns beside the rows, which reflect position values. The scale and configuration of the abacus vary according to the square value (Note: all abaci can perform decimal operations as well).

Is Abacus Good for Kids?

Yes, abacus learning for kids is good, there are so many benefits that the kid can yield if he/she learns Abacus.

#1 It not only improves the mathematical skill of the kid but also makes the child interested in the subject. It helps the kid in the overall improvement of academic skills.

Learning from Abacus helps the child to tackle the day-to-day challenges that boost up the child’s confidence and give them the power to be resilient.

#2 We have two sides of the brain: The left hemisphere of the brain which is called the digital brain is responsible for analytical information, writing, calculation, logical thinking, and reading. The other right hemisphere of the brain which is called analogue is responsible for controlling the three-dimensional sense, artistic senses, and creativity. Many research by great physicians has proven that with the continued use of the abacus a child can develop the right side of the brain which is underused. The use of the right side leads to the complete brain development of individuals.

Neurological Benefits of Abacus

The real genius of it lies in his ability to promote brain growth, rather than his computational power. As students start thinking of numbers as abacus beads (as opposed to the separate, written numerals) mentally, they not only enhance their visual/visual engine processing but also measure mathematical problems with less short-range memory space — which increases performance greatly!

When students constantly use the abacus, their ability to measure large numbers of operations in terms of both speed and precision greatly improves! People who frequently perform mental abacus mathematics show higher numerical memory ability, faster mental recovery and more neural connectivity/processing capacities overall.

How to Make Abacus for Kids?

To make it, you will need the following things

#1 50-100 Colored beads of plastic or can be wooden

#2 A Clean styrofoam tray

#3 5-10 pipe cleaner stems

#4 1 Strong tape

#5 1 Pencil

#6 1 Scissors

Steps to Make the Abacus

#1 First step to make it, is to put 5 to 10 coloured beads on each of the pipe cleaner stems. It’s suggested to put the same colour beads on each stem. As kids enjoy threading and counting the beads it is good to surprise them throughout the procedure.

#2 Next step is to piston the styrofoam tray vertically in front of you. Lay the stems horizontally on the top of the space between each of the stems. Take a marker or a pencil to mark the edge of the stem placed.

#3 Cut very tiny slits where the pencil marks are with scissors. These slits will aid in the retention of your chenille stems. Wrap each stem on the tray gently across the slits on each side of the tray. Pull just hard enough to straighten the stem without tearing the tray. Using tape to secure each one in place on the back of the tray as you seal it.  When all of the stems are in place, reinforce the back with more tape.
