Republic Day is one of India’s 3 national holidays, commemorating the introduction of the Indian constitution on January 26, 1950. Although India declared independence from British rule on August 15, 1947 (which is celebrated as a separate national holiday), the nation was basically governed for the first three years by the colonial Government of India Act of 1935.
A constituent assembly, selected by provincial legislatures shortly after independence was granted, set about creating a constitution to govern the newly independent country. After more than 2 years of work, India’s constitution was finished, solidifying the country’s autonomous democratic governance. The official implementation date of January 26 was adopted as a nod to the Indian National Congress’s Purna Swaraj (full self-rule) proclamation of independence in 1930, which was considered the first solid step toward independence from British rule.

The main event of the celebration is a big parade in New Delhi’s capital that includes cultural, historical, and military displays.
