How to teach three-letter words to kids?

How to teach three-letter words is a worry that every parent has in mind when their children become kindergarten students. So no more worries regarding three-letter words for kids. Given below are the basics to teach three-letter words for kids.

1. Knowing sounds

The first step right after learning the alphabet is to know the sound of the letters. Unlike Indian languages, English is a non-phonetic language. So words do not sound according to the spelling. Teach your children the basics of phonics. Learning and practicing phonics three-letter words would be very interesting for your children. Teach them to blend phonics. Some examples of phonics three-letter words are bat, rat, fit, yam etc. Children who are not well aware of the sounds, will not be able to give the exact pronunciation of words. So learning sounds is as important as learning the alphabets.

2. VC and CVC Blend Words

Knowledge regarding vowels and consonants play a major role in learning three-letter words. With proper understanding of vowels and consonants, they could make a range of phonics three-letter words. Teach children the difference between vowels and consonants.  First introduce VC blend(vowel and consonant) words. For example words like ab, en, it, ox, ub. When we add one more consonant we will get a set of three-letter words. This method is called CVC blend. Examples of CVC three-letter words for kids are cab, pen, hit, box, tub etc. Children can learn this trick very quickly and they will start to figure out more three-letter words by themselves.

3. Read together

Children love listening to stories. Storybook is a place where you can find thousands of easy three-letter words for kids. Use different types of storybooks and stress on three-letter words. You can ask them to figure out familiar three-letter words and also to find more letter words from the book. When you read together, children will have a better understanding of the pronunciation of the words. It’s okay to read the same stories again and again because for children they might be their favourite stories. So even if you get bored, read with them. When they get exposed to the same words much time, automatically those will inscribe in their mind. At the end of the reading, ask the words that they loved the most.

4. Use Words in Sentences

Whenever you introduce a third-letter word to your children, use them in sentences. Then they will get an idea of the word and its connection to the meaning of the sentence. Choose sentences according to the ability of your kid. It should be a sentence that includes more than two easy three-letter words for kids. Initially, it will be a bit hard for them, but gradually they will learn to use words in sentences. You can also give them a few fills in the blank exercises.

5. Pictures

To give a clear understanding of the three-letter word for kids, while introducing words shows pictures to them. Children learn fast when they visualize things around them. Even while watching cartoons or reading short stories, show them pictures of things with three-letter words. If possible, make charts and posters of two-letter and three-letter words for kids using sketches, colorful pictures and stick or hang them in their bedroom and study room.

1. Carve Letters

Children love playing with clay. Most of them are talented in making different shapes with clay. Tell them to make three-letter-words using as much clay as possible.
