Do you know that children at the age of two can learn things faster than any other age in life? In the starting period of this time, they can uniquely absorb information. Their brain development is at its peak, and this age group is considered the most intelligent humans on the earth.

If you surround them with a good learning environment, then they won’t forget a bit about everything their brain has digested. And that’s why humans remember alphabets and numbers learnt at this age for their whole life!

Introducing geometry concepts to the kids at an early age will help them in their higher school learning. But you can’t introduce them directly to the whole concept. It is a delicate age, and that’s why we are here with some geometry activities for preschoolers. Read here all the basics and fun activities to help your kids boost knowledge at an early age!

Geometry for Kids

Geometry for Kids

Will your kids be able to love learning geometry concepts? Absolutely yes! Indulging them in fun activities will help them learn things more creatively. But first, you need to introduce them to what geometry is.

Geometry is all about figures, shapes, sizes and dimension (length, breadth and height). All the things surrounding us have a specific structure, and each structure has its features. Some are big while some are small, some are round while some are straight, some are smooth, while some are rough.

Now, let’s look at some of the basics of geometry concepts and the related geometry activities for preschoolers.

Planes

Planes are flat surfaces and are two-dimensional. It goes infinitely in all directions and has no boundaries. For example, the surface of a book is a plane, a floor is a plane, and the paper we write on is a plane.

GeometryActivities for Preschoolers

#1. We can’t show the infinity of the plane surface to the kids but can tell them to imagine. Give them a big sheet of chart paper and tell them to imagine it as a continuous plane. Ask them to draw as much as they can.

Drawing more and more items in the plane will explain to them better what infinite means. The bigger the chart is the easier it will be to describe them. You can also use the floors of the playground. Give them chalk to spill out all their creativity along with learning!

#2. Using plane surfaces like paper to create three-dimensional objects. For example, dolls, boats, aeroplanes and many other crafts.

Points

Points are used to show an exact position on a plane or space. It is illustrated by a dot. A point has no dimension that means no breadth, length or height. They are fundamental to every object as they can be made by many points.

Geometry Activities for Preschoolers which Involve Points

#1. A dice has six sides each with numbers represented on it with the help of a dot. For example, if the number is two, then two dots are used. You can tell your kids to make dice using paper and mark them with dots to show the number. This will help them to learn how to use points in various ways.

#2. As the point shows position, you can play a fun game with your kids by using this concept. Mark points on the field and tells them to stand there. They have to switch their positions by escaping from a person who is not standing on the point and wants to occupy one. The one who gets away from the position will try to occupy the position again. This game will help them to know what position exactly is.

#3. Connecting dots is one of the most fun activities for preschoolers. Buy them a boom that contains these dot activities and ask them to draw and colour different shapes.

Line, Line Segment, and Rays

A line is a straight path having the only length. Here, the length is infinite. To show that it extends continuously, arrows are used. A line segment is a small chunk of a line. It has two ends, both represented by a dot. It has a finite length and can be measured using various scales.

A ray is a line having one end fixed and the other end continuous. The fixed end is represented by a dot, while the continuous one is an arrow.

Geometry Activities for Preschoolers that Involve Lines

#1. Finding straight objects in the house. Illustrate what a straight object looks like by example.

#2. Making a straight object using sticks up to your kid’s height. Mark your kid’s height on the wall so that they don’t have to struggle a lot in making it!

#3. Using matchsticks and paper to create something unique. Here, don’t help your kids. Let them bring out their visualisation into objects!

#4. Making alphabets using toothpicks or matchsticks.

Polygons

Polygons

Polygons are closed figures made up by joining more than two lines. It is of three types: regular, irregular polygon and the polygon having different numbers of lines. Irregular polygons are made by using similar lines, while irregular ones are made of unequal lines.

Polygons having different numbers of lines have a specific name, for example, triangles (three lines), square (four equal lines), and pentagon (five lines).

Geometry Activities for Preschoolers that Involve Planes

#1. Making various polygons on paper by using matchsticks or toothpicks. Also, don’t forget to tell your kids to colour it!

#2. Making polygons by using coloured papers.

#3. Cutting the sheets in different polygon shapes and asking them to make a collage with it. Make sure that you cut the paper!

Some Other Geometry Activities for Preschoolers

Some Other Geometry Activities

#1. Making a mask using paper.

#2. Creating a photo book.

#3. Making shapes with playing dough.

#4. Making different shapes of cards.

#5. Playing geometry related board games.
